Level-5 has confirmed that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch on PS5 alongside Switch 2, Switch, and PC in a simultaneous worldwide release, according to Push Square. It marks the franchise's first-ever appearance on a PlayStation platform in nearly 20 years of existence.
The announcement continues what looks like a broader push from Level-5 to expand beyond its traditional Nintendo-centric release strategy. The Japanese developer brought both Inazuma Eleven and Fantasy Life to wider audiences last year, and now its most iconic IP is following suit.
A long time coming for PlayStation players
The Professor Layton series launched in 2007 on the Nintendo DS, and for most of its history has been treated as a Nintendo exclusive franchise. Puzzle-adventure fans on PlayStation have had to watch from the sidelines while the gentleman detective solved mysteries exclusively on Nintendo hardware.
That changes with New World of Steam, which sends Layton and Luke to a steampunk-influenced setting in what promises to be a full mainline entry in the series. The multi-platform day-one release signals that Level-5 is serious about growing the franchise's install base beyond its established Nintendo audience.
Level-5 on a roll
This move fits a clear pattern from Level-5 over the past year or so. After years of operating primarily within the Nintendo ecosystem, the studio appears to be repositioning itself as a multi-platform developer, likely chasing the larger combined audience that comes with simultaneous releases across competing platforms.
For PS5 owners who have never experienced a Layton game, the series is known for its charming narrative, memorable characters, and a relentless stream of brain-teasing logic puzzles. It has sold millions of copies worldwide and built an intensely loyal fanbase, so the pool of potential new players on PlayStation is significant.
No specific release date beyond 2026 has been confirmed at this stage. Given the Switch 2 compatibility listed alongside the original Switch version, it seems Level-5 is hedging its bets across the full current and next-gen Nintendo hardware spectrum as well.
With New World of Steam shaping up as one of the more unexpected multi-platform announcements of the year, it will be worth watching whether this becomes a permanent shift in strategy for Level-5 or a one-time experiment with a marquee title.
